Hi all,
I'm getting an odd problem installing Reporting Services, hope someone can
shed some light. First a bit of background.
I had RS SP1 installed on SBS2003 and it was working fine. Joined the SP2
beta and installed this. At first it seemed to be working OK including web
parts on the Sharepoint site. Then I started getting errors with reports
unable to load ReportingServicesCompression.dll - only the Sample Reports
would work.
I couldn't find any resolution to this so finally decided to remove RS and
start from scratch.
Now when I run the install from CD the ReportServer components do not
install at all. The steps I am presented with are
1. Accept licence agreement
2. Component update
3. System Prerequisites Check where the Sharepoint warning is displayed
4. The setup dialog appears stating that I can click next to continue but
instead the routine launches straight into the install process
5. Dialog to say install has completed successfully
I've tried installing a few times generally without even getting output in
the RSStp_.cab file. The last time I did get something but I cannot see any
obvious errors.
Has anyone experienced this or have any clue where to look or what to try
next?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Andrew GaskinAre you using XP or Server 2003? If so, have you tried reverting to an
early system restore point? If another OS, can you reinstall?
If you are VERY familiar with the Registry and how it works, you could check
for straggler entries and delete them. (Note: you're really risking an OS
reinstall if you mess up the registry.)
I saw an earlier thread that indicated that other software, such as .NET 2.0
beta, might be the culprit. It could also be a permissions-related issue.
Random thought: After uninstall, are all the installation folders gone?
Maybe a folder is locked down too tight somewhere.
General rule of thumb: It's a good idea not to put beta software on
machines that you can't strip down completely (including OS re-install) if
necessary. I hope that's not too bad of news.

I did go through the registry after the uninstall and couldn't see anything
related to reporting services.
There were some folders left over which I cleaned up.
What I don't understand is why the installation routine doesn't offer any
choices. I would expect to be asked if it was a reinstall or if components
are to be added or removed. I get no option to change the installation
folders: the routine just charges on and installs what it thinks fit.
I could rebuild but at the moment I can't say for sure that this is an issue
with the beta software and not a general RS problem so I'm reluctant to do
that until I can be sure.
Thanks for the input
